Rafiya Rehman: Choosing Direction Over Circumstance

Rafiya Rehman: Choosing Direction Over Circumstance

Rafiya Abdul Raheman grew up in Sawangi Magrapur, a small village in Maharashtra’s Amravati district, where professional opportunities—especially for young women—often felt out of reach. Her father worked as a farmer, and her mother managed the household. “My parents taught me patience, hard work, and strong values,” Rafiya reflects, acknowledging the foundation that shaped her determination.

For Rafiya, education became the clearest path to independence. Yet the road ahead was far from straightforward. The challenges were not only professional but deeply personal—financial pressures influenced every choice she made. Like many young women from rural families, she felt the urgent need to secure financial stability quickly, balancing dreams of a meaningful career with the practical realities of life.

She remembers this as the most frustrating period of her life, where she had no clear direction and the future seemed uncertain.

Discovering a Path Forward

Around this time, Rafiya came across Generation India’s AWS re/Start programme, which prepares learners for entry-level careers in cloud computing. She enrolled with a clear objective: to strengthen her technical foundation and prepare more deliberately for the technology job market. Alongside technical training, the programme also focused on skills such as communication, problem-solving, and interview preparation.

“The training, mentorship, and guidance were much more impactful than I imagined,” Rafiya says. “It gave me both skills and confidence.”

More importantly, the experience changed how she thought about her future.

“Before the programme, I was focused on getting any job because of financial struggles,” she explains. “But it helped me realise that I should focus on building a long-term career in a field that suits my interests and skills.”

Entering the Workforce

After completing the programme, Rafiya secured her role at Capgemini. Her work as a support desk associate involves assisting clients with technical issues and ensuring systems operate smoothly. But the biggest shift was personal. For work, Rafiya moved to a new city and began living independently.

“Living alone in a PG has been a new experience,” she says. “It has made me more independent and responsible.”

For her family, Rafiya’s job represents more than employment. It signals the possibility of a different future. “My family feels proud that I was able to secure a good job,” she says.

A Journey of Growth

Today, Rafiya sees her career as a journey shaped by learning and persistence, not as a fixed destination. “I feel more hopeful and confident now. With continuous learning and focus, I believe I can build a stable and fulfilling career,” she reflects.

Rafiya’s story is a testament to how guidance, skill-building, and determination can transform uncertainty into opportunity—and dreams into reality.
