Kaya Roy: Building Confidence and a Career in Retail
Kaya Roy grew up in Sikharipara, Jalpaiguri, in a family of three supported by her father’s work in agriculture. After completing her Class 12, she wanted to start working and contribute to her household.
But opportunities in her area were limited, and she did not feel fully prepared to enter the workforce.
“Earlier, I didn’t feel fully qualified for the jobs I wanted because I lacked the necessary skills and training,” she says.
While she was motivated to support her family, the lack of exposure and structured guidance made it difficult to take the next step. Job options were few, and the pathway forward was unclear.
Finding the Right Entry Point
Kaya first heard about Generation India through friends. At the time, she was looking for a way to build practical skills that could lead to employment.
She enrolled in the Retail Sales Associate Programme, approaching it as an opportunity to prepare herself for real work environments.
“Generation India opened a door of opportunity for me,” she says. “The training helped me build confidence, develop new skills, and understand how to work in the retail sector.”
Learning to Work with Confidence
The training focused on helping learners navigate real-world work situations, from interacting with customers to understanding workplace expectations.
“The course content was practical and informative,” she says. “It helped me become more confident and professional.”
Mentorship played a key role in her learning experience. Trainers provided consistent guidance, helping her build confidence and take ownership of her progress.
Over time, Kaya began to see a shift – not only in her skills but in how she viewed her own potential. The uncertainty she felt earlier started to give way to a clearer sense of direction.
Stepping into Employment
After completing the programme, Kaya secured a job at Westside in Hyderabad. The role marked a transition from preparing for work to actively participating in a professional environment.
Today, she is earning and contributes to her family’s income.
“After getting the job, I became more independent, responsible, and confident,” she says.
Her work has brought financial stability at home, helping ease the pressure on her family and allowing her to take on greater responsibility.
“The income has helped support my family, and I feel more secure about my future,” she adds.
Looking Ahead
Kaya now approaches her career with a stronger sense of confidence and direction.
“I feel secure about my future,” she says.
